PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrist Discusses Home Treatment of Neuromas

Neuromas of the foot, a painful condition caused by an inflamed nerve in the ball of the foot, can be effectively treated at home with daily massage and stretches and over-the-counter painkillers, said Dr. Jacqueline Sutera, a doctor of podiatric medicine and surgery. “Of all the patients with neuromas I see in the office, I would say that ultimately only two of 10 might need surgery,” said Dr. Sutera, who practices in New York City and New Jersey.

Dr. Jacqueline Sutera

Dr. Sutera recommends placing the thumbs at the top of the foot and the other fingers on the bottom of the foot — or vice versa — and pressing and massaging the bones of the ball of the foot, “creating pressure on both sides, top and bottom.” Follow massages with stretches, using your hands to “grab your forefoot and pull it apart so you’re stretching the spaces between the metatarsals in the ball of the foot.” Massages and stretches are most effective at the end of the day, she said, ideally after a hot shower, bath, or other heat application. After the massage and stretching, the area should be iced.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Omit Cleats if There is History of Heel Pain: IL Podiatrist

It’s one of the rights of passage as a youngster playing sports for the first time. "Kids as young as 5 or 6 years old through adolescence putting on their cleats or spikes shoes for sports like little league baseball, softball, and soccer. "In general, this is not unhealthy, but problems with the heels and ball of the foot are common in growing kids. The most common problem we see with kids is a condition sometimes called Sever's apophysitis," says sports podiatrist Robert Weil, DPM

Dr. Robert Weil

"We tell parents to omit cleats or spikes if their kids have any history of heel pain. Instead, switch to multiple nub shoes or cross-training sneakers and consider soft heel cups or cushions. Persistent or ongoing problems are often related to foot type (flat or high arch), and in many cases, a podiatrist can help," says Dr. Weil.

HEALTHCARE AND POLITICS
ACA Repeal Bill Narrowly Passes House Budget Committee

The House Budget Committee has voted 19-17 to send the American Health Care Act, which repeals and replaces the Affordable Care Act, to the House Rules Committee. The bill narrowly passed the committee, as some staunch conservatives voted against the proposed law.

Reps. Gary Palmer (R-AL), Dave Brat (R-VA), and Mark Sanford (R-SC)—all members of the ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus—have opposed the AHCA because they feel it doesn't repeal the Affordable Care Act adequately and the bill subsidizes healthcare costs for low-income individuals via tax credits.

9 Ways Physicians Can Cure Burnout

2. Delegate. To decrease the time physicians spend on non-essential tasks, delegate whenever possible. CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Billing 2 Border Nail Avulsions Left Hallux

If two partial nail avulsions are performed on the left toe, would it be billed: CPT 11730-TA, CPT 11732-TA?

Medical Staff, Office of Wendy Wu, DPM, Monterey Park, CA

Response: CPT 11730 represents a partial or total nail avulsion.

A single code is billed whether you are doing a complete nail avulsion, a single border avulsion, or both part medial and part lateral borders. “TA” is the correct modifier for the left great toe. You only bill CPT 11732 for additional toes that had avulsions, not on the same toe.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Charles D. Clayton, DPM

I agree with Senator Hilkemann. I've had personal experience with the benefits of wearing a motorcycle helmet. In October 2015, I had a motorcycle accident.  Even though I was wearing a helmet, I suffered a traumatic brain injury. Though I don't remember the accident or the next week and a half, I suffered no significant permanent damage. I returned to my normal activities including finishing my sport pilot flying lessons and getting my license. Had I not been wearing a helmet, there is no question that I would not be writing this.
