PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
OH Podiatrist a Hero Again in Train Crash

Seven months after he survived the shooting at a Virginia ball field that left House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and three others wounded, Sen. Jeff Flake dusted-off his first-aid skills again Wednesday to help a man who was badly hurt when a train carrying GOP lawmakers collided with a garbage truck. Several other lawmakers who had been on the field in Alexandria on June 17 when a gunman started shooting at the Republican congressional baseball team were also on the train Wednesday chugging to a retreat in West Virginia for a Republican party event.

Dr. Brad Wenstrup

Among them was Rep. Brad Wenstrup of Ohio, a podiatrist who served as a medic in Iraq and who helped saved Scalise’s life. Wenstrup and two other doctors-turned-lawmakers, Rep. Michael Burgess of Texas and Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, worked on one of the people who was on the truck, Rep. Roger Marshall of Kansas, who is an obstetrician, told MSNBC. “Dr. Burgess and Dr. Wenstrup and Dr. Cassidy were trying to secure airways, access those injuries,” Marshall said. Wenstrup told MSNBC it was a struggle but they were "able to maintain and open airway. We put a neck brace on him and got him on a board," he said. "We're praying for him."

MEETING NEWS
NY Clinical Conference is the Largest Ever

The New York State Foundation for Podiatric Medicine held its annual clinical conference January 18-21 this year at New York City’s Marriott Marquis Hotel. This year, nearly 3,000 DPMs, podiatric assistants, professors, students, residents and exhibitors from across the country and around the world attended the conference, NY18 which featured exemplary research, evidence-based practices, and panel discussions presented by renowned experts in the podiatric field. Attendance was up from last year, making the conference the largest of its kind.

Packed exhibition hall at NY18 Clinical Conference

NY18 featured quick-fire, general lecture presentations followed by dedicated time for interactive Q&A sessions, along with added practice management workshops that allowed podiatric assistants to get the most from their time out of the office. Over 200 exhibitors were onsite, featuring the latest in medical devices, products, and services. During the conference, two New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) Board members, Drs. James Hanna and Vanessa Darmochwal, Co-Chairs of the NYSPMA Population Health Taskforce presented NYSPMA’s recently completed White Paper “Podiatric Services Deliver Value and Improved Outcomes”, intended to springboard the podiatry profession into the emerging value-based payer environment.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Become a 5-Star Physician in Reviews - Part 4

4. Low-Tech Approach

"If you don't have automated feedback processes in place, at the end of each appointment, verbally ask patients whether they are satisfied with their experience. Then direct satisfied patients to go online and a write a review." - Luke Kervin, co-CEO, practice growth platform PatientPop, Los Angeles, CA.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Request from Attorney

I have a heel pain patient’s workers' comp attorney pressuring me to write a letter stating that her plantar fasciitis was caused by long hours working on concrete. What is today's podiatric opinion as to if this can be stated.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: E/M During Global

Can we bill an E/M code during the post-op period for an open 1st ray amputation when a debridement is not performed? This high-risk patient is being seen weekly for 4 months at the wound center and the wound treatment changes periodically.

Judy Outsa, DPM, Louisville, KY

Response: The amputation codes carry a 90-day global. That applies to related procedures and E/M services. This will also vary between payers as to what is considered included in the global allowance or not. Your documentation must clearly state that the E/M service is not related, although from your post, it does.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Jack Ressler, DPM

I am very interested to find out the amount of time that passed between when the podiatrist passed away and when the practice was put on the market. I'm sure the deceased podiatrist had an excellent relationship with his patients that probably could not be duplicated by the revolving door of podiatrists who pitched in to help in this unfortunate situation. It led to a perfect storm for that other podiatrist. Although grief and shock by the family of the sudden death of their loved one probably prevented the practice from being put up for sale earlier, that delay cost them a very marketable practice.

The other podiatrist who opened was very fortunate/underhanded to be able to take advantage of a unique and sad scenario that rarely occurs. I do not believe Dr. Name Withheld’s conclusion about a practice not having inherent value. A thriving modern up-to-date practice should have a good marketable value, especially if the seller takes the time and markets it properly. I worked very hard in my practice for many years and was able to sell it. I took the time to market it properly and got a nice return for my hard work.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Brian Kashan, DPM

I just read the posting by Name Withheld, about how he would choose to open an office next to an older practice instead of purchasing an existing practice. Although the circumstances he describes, with the sudden passing of a doctor is different than the more common scenario of a retirement, there are several similarities. If the practice has been a successful practice and is valued correctly, it should be an attractive opportunity for someone to acquire.

There are several factors that I feel are being overlooked in the mindset of Name Withheld. Firstly, it is much easier to get a bank loan when...
