PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
FL Podiatrist of Big Brother Fame To Write Book About Visits to 50 States

Does anyone remember Andrew Gordon, DPM, aka Capt. Kosher from Season 12 of Big Brother? He was on the same season that Texarkana native Kathy Hillis was on. Gordon was recently in Texarkana on a personal tour called 50 states by 50. The Miami, FL, podiatrist Dr. Gordon will be turning the big 5-0 soon and he decided he wanted to visit 50 states (one state a month) by his birthday.

Eventually, Gordon hopes to write a book about his journey across America. A book, he said, that would be filled about the characters and personalities he met in each town he visited. Every town or city has a blueprint of what makes their town special, whether it be the culture, arts, food, or landmarks, and Gordon is hoping on capturing all of that in his book.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2
OH Podiatrists Donate Footwear and Socks to Individuals in Need

Several hundred pairs of shoes and socks will be delivered to individuals and families in need this winter as a result of the recent holiday drive led by Ankle & Foot Care Centers. Across its network of 20 locations in northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania, Ankle & Foot collected new and nearly new shoes donated by employees, podiatrists, patients, and friends from late November through early January. The Salvation Army will distribute the shoes and socks to local individuals and families.

Salvation Army Major Paul Moore (Center) accepts hundreds of shoes and socks collected by Ankle & Foot Care Centers.

“Having proper footwear, especially in the winter months, is very important, and we make it a priority each year to make sure more local individuals have good shoes and socks,” said Michael Vallas, practice administrator at Ankle & Foot Care Centers. “We have been partnering with the Salvation Army for 20 years and would like to thank its professionals and our community for their support."

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
MN Podiatrist Honored at FGI's International Rising Star Awards

While the emerging talent in the room at the Fashion Group International’s (FGI) Rising Stars Awards may have been tempted to applaud their own efforts, those more established designers were reminders of how the quest for the undiscovered or unexpected never really ends.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
NY Podiatrist Wants Guilty Plea to Trying to Kill Wife Vacated

Imprisoned podiatrist Ira Bernstein claims his lover coerced him into pleading guilty to trying to kill his wife to protect her generous sentencing deal — and he wants his plea and sentence vacated. Bernstein claims in court documents that Kelly Gribeluk told him she would not testify truthfully at trial to protect her sentencing deal with prosecutors and he should plead guilty for both their sakes, according to legal papers filed with the state Appellate Division by Bernstein's attorney.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Priorities for Practice Management in 2018- Part 9

9. Improve Patient Services

Focus on improving patients services, as reimbursement is significantly tied to their overall satisfaction - both through Medicare's Quality Payment Program (QPP) as well as private payer initiatives. "One should consider improving patient services, such as online payment of bills, appointments, and prescription renewal." -  Maxine Lewis, Healthcare Management Consultant, Scroggins Grear, Cincinnati, OH.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A
From:  Dennis R. Frisch, DPM

The American Podiatric Medical Association strongly supports any policy that helps to eliminate undue corporate influence over continuing medical education. APMA is extremely transparent in its relationships with industry, and as a past chair of the Annual Meeting Committee, I can confidently assure PM News readers that the generous support our corporate partners provide for our education has never interfered with APMA’s ability to provide high-quality, unbiased education.

Dr. Jacobs makes numerous assertions without providing any factual data. First and foremost, the New Jersey regulation does not apply to educational programs. The Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) in its document 720 has very clear guidelines regarding unrestricted educational grants for...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B
From: Connie Lee Bills, DPM

I agree 100% with Dr. Jacobs. I also think there isn’t 50 hours of new podiatry material to  “learn” each year. Why can’t Michigan and other states reduce the number of live hours needed in order to stop this corrupt behavior?
