PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
CA Podiatrist Charged in 174K Fraud

A former Tustin podiatrist was charged with seven felony counts of insurance fraud for allegedly billing for several patients for medical services that were never performed, authorities said on Tuesday. Renae Louise Witt, 47, is awaiting extradition from Oregon to Orange County to face charges, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office. If convicted, she faces up to 16 years in prison, authorities said. Prosecutors said Witt was a podiatrist practicing in Tustin, where she is accused of submitting fraudulent billing for services not rendered on six patients from 2015 to 2017. Prosecutors said she billed Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Cross/Blue Shield a total of $174,395 for various medical services she never performed.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Priorities for Practice Management in 2018 - Part 7

7. Increase Profitability

Increasing efficiency of daily operations is a resolution that should be on the list of every medical practice. There are many steps practices can take to boost performances and revenue. "We implemented real-time performance analysis, so the staff can view their current performance and see how that projects forward to the annual review. [Additionally], we have shared the burden of quality control with all staff, who may provide quality analysis on any examination for which they have shown proficiency." -  Shannon Walters, Manager, Stanford 3D and Quantitative

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EHR) - PART 1
From: Sylvia Trotter, DPM, Martin Taubman, DPM, MBA

I have been using PrognoCIS by Bizmatics using their cloud-based format since 2012 and am pleased with its flexibility and ease of use. My monthly fee for EMR/schduling and practice management/billing is $325, and as I recall the initial set up was very low. There was a HIPAA breach on one of their servers that potentially affected my patient files. Bizmatics paid for and performed the notification of my patients regarding the breach and have taken steps to increase their security. They have a state-side home-base, but support is overseas.

Sylvia Trotter, DPM, Lincoln, NE

Alas, a valuable lesson is once again presented: you get what you pay for. Try Office Ally. I have used it for both billing and running my practices for over 6 years. It is reasonably-priced and comprehensive. There is one caveat: you will need to create your own macro/templates at the front end, but once done, the payoff is great.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EHR) - PART 2
From: Paul Betschart, DPM, Bill Beaton, DPM

I have been using Amazing Charts for 10 years. Although not podiatry specific, it is easy to use and customize with templates, etc. All information for documenting a visit is on one page. Current prices are around $1,400 for a one-time license fee and $1,200 annually for tech support. There is a cloud version as well, which has a monthly fee based on the number of users. Many lab and practice management interfaces are available as well. All in all, a good system for the price.

Paul Betschart, DPM, Danbury, CT

I have been using the APMA-recommended MediTouch program for several years. My billing company pays for the monthly cost of the EHR and does specialize in podiatry. They also provide help with conversions and training.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From Elliot Udell, DPM

I have mixed feelings about government putting caps on what pharmaceutical companies can spend on doctors. What is happening in NJ is just the beginning. I just heard on the news that New York City is suing Big Pharma for causing the opioid crisis. There is a growing public sense that pharmaceutical companies are bribing physicians into prescribing all of their products. They do it by giving gifts, sponsoring speakers at conventions, advertising in all medical journals, sponsoring dinners, etc.

On one hand, I wonder if when we go to our respective doctors, are we being prescribed medications that are best for us, or were our doctors enticed into prescribing them because of gifts given to them directly or indirectly? On the other hand, as a person involved in both lecturing at seminars and organizing seminars, I realize that if Big Pharma did not subsidize some of the speakers, sponsor booths or give grants, many of our seminars would either cease to exist or the cost would be passed on to participants, making attendance at these events unaffordable for many practitioners.
